FOR MUSEUMS, ARCHIVES, UNIVERSITIES AND SCHOOLS
How institutions can use SmellBook.
SmellBook is an open encyclopedia of smell with permanent identifiers, cited evidence and open data. Everything below works today, on your own computer or by printing, without asking us first.
Before you start
SmellBook has no institutional partners. Everything on this page can be used without contacting SmellBook, and using it makes no one a partner. SmellBook keeps no record of who uses these, beyond the ordinary request information its hosting provider processes (see the privacy page); printing and the offline tools run on your own computer.
The encyclopedia, basic search, citations, permanent identifiers, methodology and public datasets stay openly accessible. The tools here are static downloads and pages: they store nothing and send nothing to SmellBook.

The toolkit
- How to reference SmellBook identifiers in a spreadsheet, Dublin Core, LIDO, the Europeana Data Model, schema.org or a citation.
- Heritage record templates for an object, an archival document, a place or a practice, with worked examples and collection imports.
- The self-test kit: example files, some deliberately broken, with the result each must give.
- Printable labels for every entry, with a QR code to its permanent address.
- Seminar guides for university teaching.
Research bundles
A bundle gathers existing public datasets unchanged, with the SHA-256 of each part as served at its own address (the checksum is of that file, not of the copy embedded in the bundle). It adds no data, and it contains no private ranking or graph logic, no user data and no internal records. Citing a bundle grants no licence.
- Olfactory heritage bundle: Places, traditions and evidence-gated smell links; historical sources with their holdings and passage locations; the heritage record format, templates and collection crosswalks. For museums, archives, heritage researchers. 5 parts.
- Evidence bundle: Every VERIFIED claim with its sources and evidence class, how each claim and citation was checked, historical sources, and the molecules named in claims. For researchers, reviewers, science communicators. 6 parts.
- Vocabulary bundle: The smell descriptors and place kinds as SKOS, the vocabulary registry, the shared names index and the Spanish pilot names with their review status. For linguists, terminologists, teachers. 4 parts.
- Identifiers and citation bundle: The permanent identifier ledger, citation files for entries and sources, the verified release ledger and the dataset release history with checksums. For librarians, catalogue and collection managers. 5 parts.
Offline tools
- Heritage record checker: Check one heritage record, a JSON array of records or a filled heritage-records.csv spreadsheet against the draft schema and SmellBook identifiers. SHA-256 50aa70d18690fe9fe5995abf1547a01e7906dc5b44f502a42b003629d61d1d4c
- Graph export diff: Compare two copies of the knowledge-graph export and list what changed. SHA-256 1386e65ec821c97f826deb3e26caa285a93fb5f8645b48da0ddfdd9a00bae236
- Collection import and export: Turn a LIDO or Dublin Core collection export into draft heritage records, and print valid records as Dublin Core, EDM or LIDO statements for your own catalogue. SHA-256 52667a95de7b67375e6447f9449c03c5d59dac13f963a4db1bf645818b1fadcc
The tools run with Node.js 18 or later, read only the files you give them, make no network calls and store nothing. This page as data.
