d-Limonene in dryer-vent air with fragranced and fragrance-free detergent

In a study of six residential dryer vents, the highest d-limonene concentration measured in vent air was 118 μg/m³ (mean 33.34 μg/m³) in households using fragranced laundry detergent and 0.26 μg/m³ (mean 0.25 μg/m³) in households using only fragrance-free detergent.

Six households near Melbourne, Australia, all using the same two study detergents, one fragranced and one fragrance-free liquid laundry detergent: four used the fragranced one and later switched, two used only the fragrance-free one, and the fragranced values are from before the switch. One-hour samples of dryer-vent air from the start of drying, analysed for d-limonene only. Emission composition, not the smell of detergent; d-limonene is not named as the cause of a detergent's scent; not every detergent; the study's health conclusions are outside this claim.

Emissions or air measured. What a material, product or place releases into the air was measured, usually without assessing odour.

Source: primary study; material-emission work.

Studied: air from residential dryer vents while washing done with fragranced or fragrance-free detergent dried.

This describes how the source's evidence was produced. What the claim itself covers is its scope, above; how SmellBook checked the claim, where it could, is the next section.

SmellBook checked this claim against the source's own words, so that the claim says no more than the source supports. This does not repeat or re-test the study itself.

The statement the claim rests on was found word for word in the abstract fetched from the named service, and an editor read the full abstract against every part of the claim. Abstract from OpenAlex (api.openalex.org), abstract rebuilt word for word from its word index.
