MOLECULE

6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one

Named in 1 VERIFIED claim about 1 Atlas entry: Airplane Cabin.

Where the evidence names it

Airplane Cabin

Reported volatile · the claim says “increased by-products such as”

In a reconstructed aircraft cabin section occupied by people during simulated four-hour flights, adding ozone increased by-products such as acetone, nonanal, decanal, 4-oxopentanal and 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one; several of the by-products, which also included formic and acetic acid, reached levels above their reported odour thresholds, and most formed on the occupants and their clothing.

Scope: Simulated flights in a test facility with ozone added deliberately; real cabins vary with ozone level and ventilation. CLM-CABIN-001 ↗

WHAT THIS MEANS

SmellBook lists a molecule only where a VERIFIED claim names it, in the role and scope that claim states. A molecule reported in a smell's evidence is not the whole smell: most smells come from many compounds together, and the studies measured particular samples, such as one cultivar, an essential oil or a cooked product.
