MOLECULE

4-phenylcyclohexene

Named in 1 VERIFIED claim about 1 Atlas entry: Fresh Carpet.

Where the evidence names it

Fresh Carpet

Key odorant · the claim says “identified as the source of the 'new carpet' odour”

New carpets measured in a 20 m³ environmental chamber emitted a variety of volatile organic compounds; the two with styrene-butadiene rubber latex mainly released 4-phenylcyclohexene, identified as the source of the 'new carpet' odour, and styrene.

Scope: Four carpet types collected at manufacturers' mills (study published 1993); backings and adhesives change the emissions. CLM-CARPET-001 ↗

WHAT THIS MEANS

SmellBook lists a molecule only where a VERIFIED claim names it, in the role and scope that claim states. A molecule reported in a smell's evidence is not the whole smell: most smells come from many compounds together, and the studies measured particular samples, such as one cultivar, an essential oil or a cooked product.
