MOLECULE

geraniol

Named in 2 VERIFIED claims about 2 Atlas entries: Rose, Black Tea.

Where the evidence names it

Rose

Major component · the claim says “the most abundant”

Headspace analysis of fresh white oil-bearing rose (Rosa alba) flowers found an aroma-bearing volatile fraction made up mainly of monoterpene alcohols, with 2-phenylethanol, geraniol, and citronellol with nerol the most abundant.

Scope: Fresh Rosa alba flowers from Bulgarian clones; relative amounts differed between clones and between petals and whole blossoms, and other rose species and rose oil differ. CLM-ROSE-001 ↗

Black Tea

Key odorant · the claim says “key odour-active compounds”

Aroma recombination and omission tests confirmed (E)-β-damascenone, β-ionone, dihydro-β-ionone, linalool and geraniol as key odour-active compounds of a sun-dried black tea.

Scope: One sun-dried black tea; black tea aroma varies with cultivar, origin and processing. CLM-BLACKTEA-001 ↗

WHAT THIS MEANS

SmellBook lists a molecule only where a VERIFIED claim names it, in the role and scope that claim states. A molecule reported in a smell's evidence is not the whole smell: most smells come from many compounds together, and the studies measured particular samples, such as one cultivar, an essential oil or a cooked product.
